Meet David And Patty

BackRoads Landscape Photography in Seabeck is our husband and wife fine art landscape photography studio, created by David and Patty Olsen. David picked up his first black and white film camera at age ten, later working in newspapers and as a fire department public information officer, always with a camera nearby. Retirement opened space for the two of us to travel together, wandering quiet highways, back roads, forests and deserts with matching camera bags. Those trips became the heart of our work, blending classic high resolution photographs with a gentle Painted Look that we craft through careful layering and masking in Photoshop. Every piece reflects time outdoors together and a shared wish to bring those peaceful places into your home.

How BackRoads First Began

Our story starts with a simple gift, a hand me down black and white camera that sparked a ten year old boy's curiosity and quietly set the course for our life together.

From Workdays To Back Roads

For years David's camera followed him through busy careers in newspapers and as a fire department public information officer, while Patty cheered from the sidelines. Retirement changed the pace and turned weekends into open invitations to wander, photograph, and learn the craft side by side.

Finding Our Favorite Landscapes Together

Slow drives along forested highways, quiet mornings by desert rock formations, and surprise lighthouse stops slowly shaped our shared style. We found ourselves drawn again and again to the Pacific Northwest and the Desert Southwest, places that feel like home in different seasons and now anchor the main collections that you see in our galleries.

The Painted Look

Over time David's technical experience and Patty's fresh eye met in the middle, and the Painted Look was born. We gently build layers and masks in Photoshop, adding soft texture while keeping every rock, tree, and wave crisp. On canvas, these pieces feel part photograph, part painting, and all about the places we love.
